Look what I have found!

Have you ever wanted to use delicate fibres , textiles and fabrics in a sculpture and still have structural strength and  solidity?  Then you will really be excited about Paverpol – www.paverpolaustralia.com.  The website offers lots of suggestions about how to use it to create outdoor sculptures which are both weatherproof and durable.

However I want to share with you some of the possibilities they don’t even suggest or cover.  After all there is nothing better than discovering something through experimental processes!  Paverpol can harden all sorts of materials from delicate fibres and textiles to paper leather and other fabrics

These fibrous textures were laid onto an acetate sheet with a clay wall was built around it and the paverpol was poured in a thin layer over the fibres. It only takes a day to dry and, because it is non-toxic it is very user friendly.  Any spills or messy fingers can be cleaned with water. Once dry, the sheet of fibrous material can be easily peeled off the acetate ( it only adheres to porous materials.) and fashioned into any form you’d like.  It is very hard, but retains some flexibility, whilst supporting itself.  I love this example because it retains the clear see through character of the open textures which first appealed to me. As a result of this initial pushing the boundaries of a medium students are currently trialling Paverpol books, lace bowls and hanging fabric sculptures which seem to freeze diaphanous movement.

Have you discovered any exciting possibilities with this or any other medium that is new to you. I’d love to hear about it. Please post your art material discoveries in the comments section.
